Blast Youth Hockey (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)

The Bethlehem Blast is the premier youth travel ice hockey organization in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding region. The Blast is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing competitive ice hockey and skills development for boys and girls ages 6-18 years old. As a hockey player in the Lehigh Valley and a believer in ways to develop our youth in constructive team building settings, this project was a pleasure.

The Bethlehem Blast has special web design needs in terms of content management. As a volunteer run organization, mostly parents of children in the program, it was necessary to delegate the content management responsibilities among multiple parents by team. Each team had a parent coordinator that needed limited access to only the pages created for each team. ternstyle’s content management system was the solution chosen given that it has the ability to manage all the necessary areas of the Blast’s website and specific privileges could be given to specific users.

With a playful design, a content management system, a calendar (ternCal) and a ternstyle hosting plan the Bethlehem Blast has been managing it’s own content now for 3 years.

  • "As the Bethlehem Blast® Youth Hockey organization grew, we quickly realized that we were outgrowing our existing web site’s capabilities. Additionally, the site had been developed in such a way that it required one “webmaster” who was fluent in HTML code writing to keep it updated. As a volunteer organization with over fifteen teams, we knew this was not the long-term solution.

    Enter Matthew Praetzel and Ternstyle. I was introduced to Matthew through one of the Blast’s volunteers who knew him from the men’s hockey league. One meeting with Matthew and I was convinced he was the right solution to the challenge we faced. Matthew listened to our predicament, heard what I had to say about my vision for the future, and brought back a proposal that met our need

    Utilizing Ternstyle’s content management tools, we were able to create a user-friendly template for our club website, with each team “owning” control of their specific team pages and content. This decentralization of control not only made the site easier to manage, but it gave each team the ability to promote themselves as they wanted, with photos, game recaps, announcements, statistics, or any other appropriate content. Home page and overall Club content was still controlled by a small number of Board members but the website became a communication tool for all the teams that was easy to use, easy to expand each year as the Bethlehem Blast® organization continues to grow, and cost effective (which is very important for a 501c3 not-for-profit organization like ours.

    Matthew and Ternstyle also worked with us to create the new visual template, developing creative that fit very well with the objectives set by our Board of Directors.
